[Character Concept]
People who hold their breath underwater for a living, only to surface and work laboriously while gasping for breath. Do you perhaps hold this stereotype about Jeju Haenyeo? Is the life of a Haenyeo always so difficult and painful?
Haenyeo love their work and feel pride and fulfillment. Their lives are filled with a variety of emotions—sometimes laughing, sometimes crying—as they spend time diving and interacting with their beloved family, friends, and neighbors. Just like all of us. Therefore, we aim to portray Haenyeo characters who are bright, cheerful, and deeply in love with their work, distinct from existing portrayals.
[Character Introduction]
듀(DEW)
‘Du,’ the Sanggun Haenyeo (leader of the haenyeo). Named after the dugong, which is large yet cute, ‘Du’ possesses a girlish sensibility and loves small, adorable things despite her massive frame. However, she is also the Hong Gil-dong of the haenyeo world, appearing out of nowhere whenever someone is in trouble—a giving tree that spares no expense. Her generosity is also tremendous; if she ever invites you over for a meal, the table might actually break. She is strong and possesses exceptional diving skills, earning the respect of the other haenyeo, but shh! It is a secret that she has a complex about her curly hair!
Chobi
She has a long, slender body like a sardine, so she was named 'Chobi' after the English word 'anchovy.' As you may have already guessed from the deep furrows in her brow, Chobi is a bit prickly. No, actually, very prickly. Yet, she has a warm heart, and although she pretends otherwise, she likes everyone in the village in her own unique way. She is also clumsy at expressing her emotions; she gets angry even when praised and can't say she's happy even when she is in a good mood—she has a childlike side. She is a fool who knows nothing but diving, wanting to quickly improve her skills to become a top-tier haenyeo, so she is powerless out of the water.
KIMI
I am a Haenyeo apprentice who has just entered the world of Haenyeo. I took my name from the tiny, adorable kissing gourami. Kimi is a beginner starting with diving training, and actually, she enjoys watching the sea creatures even more than diving. And just as much as she loves it, she eats really well. Kimi is a troublemaker who causes an incident every single day, but she also does so many cute things that she is the village mascot loved by everyone.
