The way character IP is loved varies from era to era and platform to platform.
It is no exaggeration to say that the success of character IP these days depends more on ‘where and how it started’ than simply ‘how cute it is.’
Even with the same character, the speed and direction of growth differ completely depending on whether you start on Instagram or YouTube.
This is because the two platforms—Instagram, which shares daily life with fans centered on emotional empathy, and YouTube, which builds a worldview through stories and immersion—each possess different charms and potential.
Especially in an era like today where platform trends are changing rapidly, it is more important than anything for a character to find a stage that suits them.
So today, I’m going to look at which methods can keep fans’ hearts captive for a longer time through examples of characters gaining attention on both Instagram and YouTube.
Instagram is the platform most specialized in conveying emotions through images.
One of the major advantages is that fans can immediately feel the character's charm with just a short sentence and a single image.
Representative examples include ‘Cherov Montmorancy’ and ‘Violent Rabbit’.

Cherov Montmo is a puppy doll character that has received a lot of love through relatable everyday memes.
Although there are limitations to using Instatoons and Reels since they use actual doll photos, they are gaining popularity by delivering empowering messages to modern people through photo posts.
Cherov Montmou's posts go beyond simply showing off cuteness; they permeate the daily lives of fans with short yet comforting sentences like, "You worked hard today."
In this way, Mongmo established himself as a presence that expresses the fatigue of daily life, evolving from a mere ‘viewing character’ into a character with whom emotions are shared.

On the other hand, Violent Rabbit captivated Instagram followers with a charm completely different from Mongmo.
Violent Rabbit is a rabbit character with a cute appearance, but its personality and message exude a completely different vibe.
It resonates deeply with Generation Z by briefly and impactfully conveying honest inner thoughts that anyone has likely experienced in their daily lives.
In this way, Instagram conveys a message by capturing expressions, sentences, and colors within a single image, without characters having to unfold a lengthy story.
So, on Instagram, it is more important to ‘accurately convey emotions in a single short shot’ than ‘how often you upload content.’
Just as Instagram has established itself as a space for people to share their day and emotions, characters are also captivated by those who share their daily feelings and routines.
I hope you remember that when moments accumulate where a single frame brings a smile and a single sentence offers comfort, that character naturally establishes itself as an ‘emotional friend’ in the fans’ daily lives.
YouTube is a platform where ‘dwell time’ is longer than on Instagram, allowing fans to watch a character’s story for a long time.
So, unlike Instagram, character movement and narrative play the most important roles.
Representative examples include 'Chongmyeong' and 'Ppangppang-i's Daily Life'.

TotalNumberOfPeople started with short, fast-paced animations and built a fanbase by crossing genres such as comedy, horror, and slice of life.
Although the art style is simpler compared to broadcast animation, it creates a structure where viewers cannot help but focus due to the fast-paced story progression of about 5 minutes.
In particular, the ‘Eating Alone After Work’ content animated mukbang targeting single-person households, and it resonated deeply with people.
Furthermore, it also received a lot of attention for its shorts content.

Another example, ‘Ppangppang’s Daily Life,’ is an animation themed around B-grade sensibility and comedy, dealing with small episodes from everyday life.
Since it deals with the daily lives of the characters, the storyline is similar, but it brings laughter to people through the fiery and cheerful reactions of Ppangppang and Okji, as well as the recently trending memes.
It also offers a different charm to viewers in every episode by making changes to the animation and direction.
In this way, YouTube can be described as a ‘space for adding stories to characters’ by accumulating various episodes.
What is important at this point is that you must respond to the flow of the times.
As YouTube trends are moving rapidly and short-form content is becoming more popular, video length, dialogue tempo, and editing rhythm must all continue to evolve to keep up with the trends.
In other words, characters must grow into ‘brands that come alive and move in line with trends,’ rather than being ‘protagonists of content.’
The important thing is not ‘where you post it,’ but ‘how well you understand and can showcase the strengths of your character.’
If your strength is conveying emotions with a single short clip, Instagram would be a good stage, but if you can express your character through movement and storytelling, YouTube would be a better fit.
The key is not the platform, but knowing how characters can connect with people.
No matter whether you choose Instagram or YouTube, if you clearly understand the charm and direction of your character, that choice will ultimately be the right answer for you.
